Enhancing the Museum Visit

Lo-fi Prototype

Student-device

The student interface guides students through the museum in topic based routes. "Pathways" focusing on scientific principles like electricity and sound, piece together a series of exhibits that explore the chosen topic. Students follow clues to exhibits, answer a series of questions on every exhibit and then continue on their path to the next. Students learn about the exhibit from the content provided on the device, text, audio, and graphic. When prompted, students input their answers into the device in the form of text, sketches, and photos.

Features Include:

  • Collapsible Dashboard: Icon rich global navigation and progress awareness
  • Interactive Learning: Audio enhanced exhibit based question and answer
  • Locative Mapping: Students find themselves and their pathway
  • Paging: Lost students can page teacher and chaperone

Teacher-device

The proposed interface for the teacher device will include functionality for tracking student progress throughout the museum as well as student, teacher, or chaperone location. The teacher will have the ability to send messages to museum staff, other teachers, chaperones, teams of students, individual students, or the entire group representing the class. The teacher will also have the ability to edit pathway questions, the class roster, and student team assignment. Chaparones and secondary teachers would receive a similar interface, but editing functionality wouldn't exist.

Teacher-website

The proposed design includes an option for teachers to go online and create tailored pathways according to the needs of their class. They can view default pathways, alter them or create their own pathways all together. The teacher can upload student rosters to the site and creating student teams ahead of time. Teachers also have an option to collaborate between themselves by sharing their personal pathways.

Student-website

The proposed design gives students an option to go online and re-visit their experience at the museum. The student interface mainly has four main features:

  • My Visit: This allows the student to re-visit his experience at the museum. The student is presented with a link to each of his visits.
  • My Pictures: Pictures that the students take during their visits to the museum. The files are auto-sorted according to the visit but can be re-structured
  • My Files: Audio and text files that the students create during their visit. These are auto-sorted according to the visit but can be re-structured.
  • My Profile: Students have a profile that is created when they create their account and which can be edited by them.
