Milestone Three - Personas

Persona: Christopher Silvins

10 year-old, Ann Arbor Michigan

Christopher is in fifth grade. He is the oldest out his three siblings, his brother Zach is 7 and sister Elise is 5. Zach lives with his mom and step-dad on the Old West Side of Ann Arbor. Chris and his brother Zach both go to Bach Elementary School in Ann Arbor, and his sister Elise is still in preschool at a nearby Montessori school. In addition to school, Chris plays baseball in the spring and hockey in the winter. His step-dad works at UM as an administrator and his mom works at for the city of Ann Arbor's Department of Recreation.

Chris's family is pretty social and he has a lot of friends. They often have other families over for dinner and go away to their house in the UP together with other kids and families. They play a lot of games at home, like uno, board games, and charades. In Chris' house there is a "game room" where they have an xbox, board games, a PC with high speed internet access and a set of encyclopedias and a dictionary. The kids do their homework in this room and Chris uses the computer to do research sometimes as well as play games and surf the net. His mom only lets him play on the computer for one hour every night. Chris often looks up stuff on wikipedia and other sites that he goes to through his school's website for help with his homework.

Chris likes school and especially likes science. He gets really excited when the teacher lets them do experiments at school, and he has entered the science fair for the past three years. The first time he went to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum was when he was 7 for the birthday party of a friend from his class. Chris loved it and when his mom came to pick him up, she saw how excited he was by the exhibits and has been regularly brining him and the rest of the family back ever since. They go about 4 times a year, usually on a weekend when it is cold outside.

Last year, in 4th grade, Chris' teacher brought the whole class to the museum. It was such a great day for the class. Chris' whole class got to walk over to the Hands-On Museum from school and spend the day at the museum. Chris and three of his friends were in a group with Jimmy's mom Pam, who went with them to the museum. The group had to follow their teachers instructions and visit a list of exhibits that she turned into a scavenger hunt for the class to complete in their assigned teams. Chris and his team had a great time the whole day they were at the museum. The only argument they got in was at the end, when they had to decide who got to keep the paper that they filled out with all their answers, all the kids wanted to take it home. The argument was finally settled when Pam said she would make copies at her house that afternoon.
